A practical collection of startup guides, business templates, marketing resources and profit calculators for box truck owner-operators.

Full Business System, $750

Starting a box truck business takes more than buying a truck. You need to understand startup steps, prepare business paperwork, approach potential customers and evaluate whether a load or contract makes financial sense. JRN’s Full Business System brings these resources together in eight organized stages so you can work through them at your own pace.

Included: 33 PDF resources and 4 Excel calculators (37 files in total), plus 15 days of text and email support (responses within 24 hours).

The following sample scenarios use the figures that come pre-filled in each workbook, to show how an owner-operator can use the four tools to think through offers. The figures are hypothetical and are not guaranteed results. Your own numbers will be different, and results also depend on your costs, your truck and the work you take.

Flat Rate Route Profit Calculator

Example: a dedicated route pays $320 per day for 5 days a week, which is $1,600 in weekly gross pay. The route covers 256 loaded miles and 40 unpaid deadhead miles a day. At 13 miles per gallon and $4.50 per gallon, weekly fuel is about $512. With $238 for truck rental or lease, $150 for insurance and $50 in tolls, parking and other fees, total weekly expenses are about $950. That leaves roughly $650 per week in net profit before taxes. It shows how a fixed daily rate looks once fuel, deadhead miles and fixed weekly costs are counted.

Expedite Profit Calculator

Example: a week of expedite work covers 2,000 miles at $2.20 per mile, which is $4,400 in revenue. Fuel at 10 miles per gallon and $4.70 per gallon is $940. Driver pay at 19% is $836, a dispatch fee at 7% is $308 and a factoring fee at 3% is $132. Add a $1,500 rental or loan payment and total expenses are $3,716. That leaves $684 in net profit, or about $0.34 per mile, before taxes. It shows why the quoted rate per mile and the profit per mile can be very different numbers.

Load Offer Evaluator

Example: a broker offers $1,200 flat for a 900-mile loaded trip, and the truck must also drive 50 unpaid deadhead miles. At 10 miles per gallon and $4.20 per gallon, fuel is $399. Driver pay at 20% is $240, dispatch at 3% is $36 and factoring at 4% is $48. Add $238 for the truck rental or loan allocation and $15 in other costs, and total expenses are $976. That leaves $224 in net profit before taxes. It shows how an offer that sounds good can look different after all costs are counted. If you drive the truck yourself, set driver pay to 0%.

Retail Contract Run Profit Analyzer

Example: a recurring retail delivery contract pays $625 per run for 2 runs a week, which is $1,250 in weekly revenue. Each run is 300 loaded miles plus 20 unpaid return miles. At 10 miles per gallon and $4.75 per gallon, weekly fuel is $304. Driver pay at 15% is $187.50. With $168 for rental or lease, $79 for insurance and $50 in other fees, weekly expenses are $788.50. That leaves $461.50 in net weekly profit before taxes, or about $1.95 per mile once the unpaid return miles are included. It shows the effect of unpaid return miles on a recurring contract.

Why the profit calculators matter

The four Excel tools help you work through numbers for flat-rate routes, expedite jobs, load offers and retail contract runs. Each includes its own instruction sheet. They support better-informed estimates; they do not guarantee profit.
